New Instagram updates will prioritize original content

Today, in a post on his official Instagram account, Adam Mosseri announced up and coming changes that will prioritize original content. The changes are set to demote accounts (aka aggregators) that repost content from other users, a move that is surely going to please photographers and content creators. Here’s what we know so far.


In his reel, Mosseri introduced what the company calls Direct replace. The platform plans to prioritize original content in the recommendations tab over reshared content from aggregators. This should help boost visibility for original content creators.

Mosseri also said accounts that constantly reshare others users content will be removed from the recommendation tab all together. The head of the social media platform recommended aggregator accounts move toward creating orginal content if they still want to get seen by accounts that don’t follow them.

The changes won’t come into effect immediately, but Mosseri did say they should stream through over the coming weeks and months.

The update will no doubt please photographers and videographers. Those who create original content often complain that aggregator accounts reshare their work, often without crediting them as being the person behind the original piece of content.

The announcement has already received plenty of positive responses. One user, @robindavisstudio wrote “This makes me feel more hopeful for the future of our orginal creative content. Thank you!!!”. Another user, @zee.travel said, “Finally won’t have to chase people who repost your content without permission”.

How successful the new updates will be is yet to be seen. However, as things stand, it’s a promising step forward, especially for those who create great content that was previously being hijacked by aggregator accounts.
